What to avoid:        READ THIS BEFORE BUYING

Puppy Farmers
Puppy Farming is rife in this country.  Some are literally farms in isolated areas, some are people with a house full of cages.  The dogs are repeatedly bred until dead or so ill they can't reproduce.  Sold in supermarket type outlets and sometimes individual homes, do NOT buy them.  You are not rescuing, you are simply fuelling the vile trade and YOU are the reason it still exists.  Yes, kitten farmers exist too, over breeding and ignoring health testing.

Back Yard Breeders (BYB)
These are usually people with pets who don't literally breed in the back yard (although some do).  They breed both pedigrees and crossbreeds and tell endless lies.  No health testing or paperwork, occasionally something from a registration body other than the Kennel Club, which in our opinion is worthless.  These can be puppies or kittens.

Your Responsibilities
Health testing is not a guarantee.  It reduces the risks of some disease, but you have a responsibility too.  Sensible exercise and a good quality diet make the difference.
Your breeder should show you original copies of any health tests conducted.  Check the name, breed and age of the dog on the certificate matches the one you are seeing.

However many dogs you have owned, classes help social learning, join one.

Beware
Breeders telling you the parents are registered but pups are not are not will not be on this site.  There is a possibility that the parents aren't registered or their breeder put endorsements on to stop registration until the dog was health tested.  The parents could be stolen or be crossbreeds.  They may have been sold without papers as they have a fault and shouldn't be bred from.
"Health checked" and "vet checked" mean nothing.  This is NOT health testing unless the vet is Superman and used X-ray vision.

Important
There are many scam adverts out there, use your common sense or ask for advice.

Safe Dog Buying (new window)

Occasionally there may be a genuine problem such as lost paperwork or a parent who sadly dies.  Inform us if this happens, we have encouraged our breeders to tell us in advance of sale if there is a problem.

Remember, many Insurance companies will not cover you for an illness in a puppy whose parents were not health tested.
